Shuana Foley has worked at the ECF Art Centers’ Westside studio since 2004. Foley’s body of ink, graphite, and mixed media work represents a decades long exploration of and fascination with color and text. Every composition created by Foley is often almost entirely filled with rows of linear text culled from various printed sources and recombined by the artist to appear as a kind of stream of consciousness form of writing. Occasionally, the text in these compositions is obfuscated, making its legibility impossible while still being recognizable as writing. As such, her interest in text as a form, reference, and instrument of communication appears to outweigh any singular definition or meaning, in other words, Foley’s fascination with text appears to be a fascination with meaning itself.
