Sarah Telkamp

Sarah Telkamp uses various mediums of art including ceramics and watercolors, but most commonly uses graphite and paper for her drawings. Sarah interchanges between dreary and joyful scenes of wolves in order to convey her emotions. Her choice of wolves is imperative to understanding her and her work. Sarah relates to the nature of a wolf as she enjoys solidarity but finds comfort in the support of a “pack”. Sarah’s “pack” is her family and simultaneously her source of inspiration for her art. Sarah is also a fan of anime and often takes characters from a fandom and “wolf-i-fies” them. The term is one Sarah has created to explain her process; she says, “to ‘wolf-i-fy’ means to draw a character as a wolf.” Sarah is an active ECF artist and takes part in multiple clubs at the Art Center including: Fashion Club, Anime Club, Ceramics Club and Comics Club. She also favors attending field trips to local Retirement Homes. In her spare time, she likes to watch YouTube videos (recently, she has been watching a lot of “My Hero Academia”) and attend piano lessons. Sarah also loves to snack on chocolate Pocky Sticks.

Sarah Telkamp began doing art her freshman year of High School and has been working at the ECF Art Centers’ San Pedro studio since 2017. Sarah’s subject matter began with a series of dragons and gradually progressed onto scenes of wolves that she continues today. Her younger brother, Joshua, in particular is a large influence. She models her main wolf character, also named Joshua, off of his strong and protective yet sometimes obnoxious and playful characteristics. Sarah is also influenced by a few of her ECF instructors – Jesse who continuously supports her at the studio and Janet who has introduced her to ceramics. Sarah likes to draw as a hobby and sometimes gifts her work to her family. For the future, she would like to learn how to use acrylics and strengthen her skills in ceramics. She holds the long-term goal to be featured in an art show one day.
