Nelson Cobian
Nelson Cobian began at the ECF Art Centers’ Downtown LA studio in 2009 and transferred to the Whittier studio in 2023. His artistic production is constant; his studio is any place that he can draft a sketch or become inspired by a place, thing, or event. His sketchbooks are in-numerous and burst at the seams with collages and reference notes; they show the wear and tear of extensive everyday travel and use. Cobian works mostly in graphite and color pencil on paper. His subject matter vacillates between popular culture icons and an amalgamation of found images and his own imagination. Regardless of the subject matter of his drawings, they are always rendered in meticulous detail, often making it difficult at first glance to distinguish between his own drawing of the cover of a magazine or a product package, for example, and his rendering.
